After the India Pakistan cease-fire announced on May 10th,2025, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) resumed the 32 airports across northern and western India for flights on Monday.

The AAI announced earlier that these airports closure will be extended till May15th due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, following the launch of Operation Sindoor in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack but after the cease-fire announcement, AAI has issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) to reopen the airports and flight routes.

A separate notice also confirmed that 25 international air routes have now been made available for the passengers.

Airports are now cleared to reopen but airlines will need time to schedule their flights again. "Reopening an airport is quick, but airlines must plan their flights, which takes time," the official said.

Reopening of the airport's decision was taken after the IAF confirmed no unusual activity reported along the border on Monday. “The night remained peaceful across Jammu and Kashmir and nearby border areas,” the IAF said.

AAI Announced Airport Shut Down

After the launch of “Operation Sindoor”, where Indian armed forces carried out precise strikes at nine terror- affected areas in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), AAI decided to shut down multiple airports across the country. As per the Indian government, all these sites were linked to several militant organisations, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Operation Sindoor was India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack where terrorists killed 26 civilians on April 22.

Tight Security on the Airports

During the closure process, AAI allowed Delhi airport to remain open. Passengers faced delays due to extra security checks but offered free rescheduling or full refunds by the airlines.

AAI is taking precautions to maintain the security at all airports and following orders from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Extra checks and a ban on visitor entry at the airport, are a few measures which will stay in place until May 18. Passengers are recommended to arrive at least three hours before their flight.

Pakistan Airspace blocking Indian Flights

In an announcement on Saturday May 10th, Pakistan reported that their airspace will continue to block Indian airlines but reopen for international flights. Indian flights flying for Europe, US, and Canada will be taking longer southern routes through Mumbai’s airspace, the Arabian Sea, and Muscat.
